Coronavirus in Japan – set new record for incidence

On August 6, 15,455 new cases of coronavirus were reported in Japan, a record. And the total since the start of the pandemic has exceeded one million.

The number of cases has increased by 144,000 since the start of the Tokyo Olympics on 23 July. However, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga confirmed that, in his opinion, the Games did not contribute to the increase in the number of infected.

The number of new infections in Tokyo has reached 4515. And in the neighboring densely populated prefecture of Kanagawa, the number of cases has grown to 2082, four times less than two weeks ago.

Osaka, the largest city in the west of the country, has also reportedly increased its incidence to a record 1,310. These numbers suggest that the virus is spreading rapidly outside Tokyo.

The authorities say that the spread of the coronavirus could lead to a state of emergency across the country.

“We have to take into account local conditions. Each region can take its own step,” said Prime Minister Suga.

He also announced that a decision will be made on the admission of spectators to the Paralympic Games.
