Ireland is back to restrictions similar to those introduced during the first coronavirus wave. The government decided on Monday that the fifth – highest – level of epidemic threat will apply in Ireland from Wednesday.

The government agreed with Friday’s recommendation of the Council for Emergency Health Situations (NPHET), which has been recommending the introduction of the fifth level of threat for two weeks now. At that time, the second level was in force in almost the entire country, but then the government rejected this recommendation and raised the threat only to the third level.

However, as the number of infections detected has grown faster and faster since then, ministers have now taken a more drastic step. According to the scale adopted in mid-September, risk level five means a return to the same restrictions that were introduced at the end of March with the exception of schools that are to remain open – but the decision on this matter may change depending on the development of the situation.
