Hospitals in Jakarta and other major cities in West and Central Java are reportedly already overcrowded. Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 2.1 million cases and more than 57,000 deaths have been reported in the country. This assumes that the real number is much higher, since Indonesia has a very low level of testing.
The incidence has skyrocketed in recent weeks after the end of Ramadan and the identification of new strains, including Delta. The outbreak was predictable, according to Nadia Tarmizi, spokesman for the COVID City Working Group.
“The peak is expected in the next two to three weeks,” she added.
Amid the outbreak, fears are mounting that Indonesia’s weak healthcare system could collapse as some hospitals are already refusing to admit patients. Today, only 5% of the population is vaccinated in the country.
