Coronavirus in Germany. Police control borders and trains – media reports

New restrictions came into force in Germany on Monday due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “The Ministry of the Interior has sent thousands of policemen to enforce the new protective measures at airports, national borders and on trains,” Spiegel weekly reported on Monday.

According to information from the Spiegel weekly website, thousands of officers across the country at the borders and on long-distance trains are to check on Monday whether the new regulations are complied with, and if in doubt, impose fines.

Police officers are to carry out random personal checks both at airports and at regular border crossing points. They will also inform people coming to Germany from areas particularly at risk of a pandemic about the regulations regarding the coronovirus. They provide for a coronavirus and quarantine test when entering Germany from high-risk areas.

Notifications and inspections

Until now, airport police have only handed out flyers informing about the applicable regulations. Now, if officers during the inspection notice people who may be suspected of being infected with the coronavirus, they should report it directly to the competent health department.

Police officers are also to patrol long-distance trains from Monday and check that passengers comply with the obligation to protect the mouth and nose. If travelers refuse to wear a face mask, officers will fine them.

The Interior Ministry hopes that the tighter controls will bring more discipline in complying with the new rules to slow down the second wave of coronavirus in Germany, Spiegel stressed.

More restrictions

The German chancellor and prime ministers of the German federal states agreed last week to introduce further restrictions amid the rising number of coronavirus infections in the country from November 2.

According to the arrangements, members of only two households, up to ten people, will be allowed to stay together in public places. Restaurants, bars, clubs, discos and pubs are to be closed by the end of November.

Schools and kindergartens will remain open despite the surge in coronavirus infections. The stores should also remain open, but there must not be more than one customer per 10 square meters.
