Coronavirus in Europe | Italy: First “COVID-19-proof” flight from New York arrives in Rome

The first “COVID-proof” flight arrived this Wednesday at Roma from New York, an initiative to open air routes between Europe Y United States, blocked by the pandemic.

Passengers had to submit a negative proof of COVID-19 done 48 hours before taking the Alitalia flight at Kennedy airport and doing another test upon arrival in Rome.

The 100 passengers on board were negative, according to the Italian news agency AGI, a result that allowed them to avoid the 14-day quarantine required of passengers from United States.

Among them was Chiara, an Italian living in the United States who traveled with her husband and a seven-month-old son to visit family.

“We have not come to Italy for a year,” he told AFP. “Our son was born in April and so far no one in our families has been able to meet him. That is why we are so excited,” he confessed.

All people on board had to use masks and replace them every four hours, according to the provisions for the flight.

“This is an extraordinary experiment, because it reactivates air travel, mobility and the economy even with the coronavirus in circulation,” declared Nicola Zingaretti, governor of the Lazio region, which includes Rome.

The initiative was launched in September for domestic travel between Rome and the financial capital Milan, to the north, with the motto “virus-free flight”.
