Coronavirus in Europe – COVID deaths on the rise in Romania and Bulgaria

The head of the University Ambulance Hospital of Bucharest (Romania), Catalin Tsirstoy, said that every day as many people die in the country as the population of an ordinary village in Romania. The morgues are overflowing with COVID-19 victims, he said. And the healthcare system is close to a tipping point.

“All this is caused by one thing: the inability of the population to understand that they need to be vaccinated,” Tsirstoy said.

In Romania, the average daily mortality rate is more than 30 times higher than in Portugal, France or Spain.

Despite regular vaccine supplies, the two countries fully vaccinated the lowest proportion of their populations in the EU: 34.3% of Romania’s residents received two injections, while in Bulgaria 22.8% of the country’s residents were fully vaccinated.

For comparison, in the EU countries the average is 65.2%. In countries such as France, Italy, Belgium, Denmark, the vaccination rate is approaching or exceeding 70%, and in Malta and Portugal – 80%.
