Coronavirus in dogs: can they be spread?

Although the World Health Organization denied that animals can transmit the COVID-19, especially after a dog in Hong Kong threw “weak positive” in Coronavirus, the concern of many people about a possible contagion to animals persists.

Despite the result, the animal, which had been in contact with its infected owner, did not present any symptoms related to the virus.

Until now, there are no cases or scientific evidence that the new Coronavirus can be transmitted to animals, nor that they can transmit it to humans.

The WHO assured that there are no contagions of the cronavirus COVID-19 to animals

Veterinary health specialists have detailed that a canine Coronavirus exists, but it is not related to COVID-19 and is not transmitted to people, so there is no danger between pets and humans.

However, the World Association of Small Animal Veterinarians released some hygiene recommendations in case a person at home tests positive for COVID-19, in order to prevent the spread of the pandemic virus.

Constantly washing our hands, keeping our pets neat, avoiding contact with animals and wearing a mask are some of the advice that veterinarians give in the midst of the global crisis.

On the other hand, the WHO points out: “There is no data to indicate that companion animals or pets such as cats and dogs have been infected or are able to spread COVID-19.”

Another recommendation of animal protectors is to avoid putting masks on our pets because, far from helping them, it can cause stress and discomfort.
