Although the state of California reported this Wednesday 697 deaths due to coronavirus -the second highest figure in the last three weeks-, the panorama of the COVID-19 pandemic is improving with a clear flattening of the contagion curve.
This Wednesday, 16,728 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in California, of which 6,917 were registered in Los Angeles County. They are still many, but if you compare with the numbers of three weeks ago (January 7) when there were 36,385 new cases in the state and 19,719 in Los Angeles County, then it reflects a reduction of about 54% and 65%, respectively. .

The alarming total of deaths is explained by the fact that the hospitalization rate is still almost at the limit or to the limit, specifically in Los Angeles, a county that has completed one year since its first official case of coronavirus, and where 307 deaths and 6,213 people were hospitalized on Wednesday.

It is due to the flattening of the contagion curve that at the beginning of this week the state authorities lifted the order to be at home.
“Today we can start to see real light at the end of the tunnel when it comes to the number of cases,” Governor Gavin Newsom said Monday. “We are in a position to project four weeks ahead with a significant decline in cases.”
Comparison of COVID-19 cases of the last weeks
Comparing figures for the past seven days with respect to the previous two weeks shows the decrease in cases, although not in hospitalizations and much less in deaths.
In the week of January 21-27, 150,543 cases were officially registered in California and 3,791 deaths. In Los Angeles County there were 56,055 cases and 1,526 deaths.
From January 14 to 20 there were 238,332 cases in the state and 3,331 deaths. Of them, in Los Angeles were 83,180 and 1,442, respectively.
And a week before, From January 7 to 13, the total number of cases in California was 298,813 with 3,640 deaths, while in Los Angeles County there were 108,671 cases and 1,629 deaths.
It was possibly in the latter when the consequences of the Christmas holidays were most reflected, in which many family and friends gatherings spread the virus more.
That is the total of cases at the state level of the past seven days is very close to representing 50% of the total of two weeks before, and the same in the total Los Angeles cases.
However, it is too early to claim victory and the authorities continue to ask the population to continue using a face mask, keeping social distancing and other prevention measures.
It will be interesting and important to see the indicators in the following weeks already with the effects of the new economic reopening of California.
