Coronavirus in Belgium: the number of patients in intensive care goes back above the 400 mark

In total, 1,898 people are hospitalized due to Covid-19, including 408 patients (+ 3%) treated in intensive care, according to figures from the Sciensano Public Health Institute updated Monday morning. The threshold of 400 beds occupied by Covid patients in intensive care had not been crossed since the beginning of January. The positivity rate is now 6.8%. If, on Friday alone, there had been 204 hospitalizations, a figure at the highest since the end of December, this indicator had stopped at “only” 152 on Saturday, in line with the daily average recorded at the beginning of week and then approached 150 admissions per day. A total certainly down, undoubtedly because of the weekend, but nevertheless in sharp increase compared to that recorded on the Saturday which precedes (111).

The same phenomenon occurred on Sunday, with 127 hospitalizations, compared to the 88 recorded on Sunday, February 21.

It remains to be seen whether the 200 hospitalizations milestone crossed on Friday will be crossed again in the coming days of the week.

Between February 19 and 25, 2,407.6 new infections were detected on average per day, up 19% from the previous week. Only the province of Limburg recorded a drop in contamination (-4%). On the contrary, a strong increase is observed in the province of Walloon Brabant, which saw its number of Sars-Cov-2 infections increase from 504 (during the week of February 12 to 18) to 754 last week (+ 50% ). However, the province of East Flanders remains at the top of the contaminations with 2,775 cases detected between February 19 and 25.

Since the start of the pandemic in Belgium, 771,511 cases of coronavirus have been diagnosed.

Still between February 19 and 25, an average of 39,800 tests were carried out each day (+ 4%). The positivity rate, ie the proportion of positive tests compared to all the screenings carried out, reached 6.8%, as the day before. This ratio fluctuates around 6% in all age categories, with the exception of the 10 to 19 age group where it reaches 10.5%. In the province of Namur, the positivity rate climbs to 10.2% while it is around 8% in Brussels as well as in the other Walloon provinces, except in Liège where it is at 6.6%.

Over the period from February 19 to 25, 24.1 people died on average per day from the virus (-36%), bringing the toll to 22,077 deaths since the start of the pandemic in Belgium.

The reproduction rate (Rt) of the coronavirus is set at 1.17. When it is greater than 1, it means that the transmission of the virus is progressing.

In the meantime, 495,090 people have received a first injection of the vaccine, which is equivalent to 5.4% of the total population. A second dose was administered to 307,749 people, or 3.3% of the population. Thus, 3.34% of those over 18 have full vaccination coverage.
