The coronavirus in Belgium has led to strict containment measures implemented ten days ago to contain its spread. These have resulted in tensions in some prisons in the country which turned into rebellions this Wednesday evening in Leuze-en-Hainaut and Arlon.
“Riot in Arlon prison for the suppression of visits, p.s, it heats a lot”, indicated to us around 9:30 p.m. a person via the orange button Alert us. “Arlon prison is on fire, detainees are fed up with the situation, the police have to intervene”, assured another. Our colleagues from TVLux informed on their website they were “about twenty refused to return to the cells.” Some had set fire to the courtyard, near the courtyard, added local television. Federal police were called in to reinforce the area. In most prisons across the country, containment measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus have increased tension.
Almost at the same time, a similar scenario had occurred in the prison of Leuze-en-Hainaut. Some prisoners from Leuze prison refused to return to their cells late Wednesday afternoon. The recalcitrant prisoners demanded the free telephone and more canteen products. The police had been called to the scene. Shortly after 8 p.m., the police forces of the Tournaisis region went to the Leuze-en-Hainaut prison, where a group of prisoners still refused to reintegrate their cells. Since confinement, the yards are insured but are limited as regards the number of prisoners.
In Italy a few weeks ago, the confinement had also resulted in serious riots which had resulted in the death of several prisoners.
