Coronavirus. Historical monthly unemployment increase of 22% in April

Number of jobseekers having no activity exploded in France in April, the confinement widespread in force against the background of health crisis resulting in an unprecedented monthly increase that brought category A enrollments to a record of more than 4.5 million people, but which is explained by three-quarters by the transfer of previously registered job seekers in reduced activity (B and C), announced Pôle emploi Thursday, May 28.

According to data published on Thursday by the Ministry of Labor and Pôle emploi, the number of job seekers registered with Pôle emploi in category A (without any activity) in France (excluding Mayotte) jumped 22.6% last month , or 843,000 more people than in March.

The magnitude of the monthly increase, as well as the total number of registrants in category A, reached new levels in April since the start of this statistical series in 1996.
