Coronavirus heart failure: Klaus Wowereit’s partner is dead

Jörn Kubicki has suffered from a lung disease for several years. The 55-year-old recently became infected with the corona virus. Now the life partner of Berlin’s former governing mayor Klaus Wowereit has died.

Berlin’s former governing mayor Klaus Wowereit mourns the loss of his long-term partner: Jörn Kubicki died of heart failure after a long-term lung disease and an infection with the corona virus. This had initially reported the “Bild” newspaper. Wowereit’s lawyer Christian Schertz confirmed Kubicki’s death in the evening without going into the details.

The serious lung disease is therefore COPD, the Chronic Obsctrutive Pulmonary Desease. This chronic obstructive bronchitis stands for the treatable but not curable narrowing of the airways. The air flow is particularly restricted when exhaling. According to “Bild”, Kubicki said a few weeks ago during one of his last public appearances: “I have COPD, I can hardly put one foot in front of the other.”

The 55-year-old neurologist Kubicki was a second degree cousin of the deputy FDP chief Wolfgang Kubicki. According to “Bild am Sonntag”, he and Wowereit (66) were a couple for almost 30 years. Wowereit was governing mayor of Berlin from 2001 to 2014 and one of the deputy federal presidents of the SPD from 2009 to 2013. He was open about his homosexuality. In 2001, before he was nominated to be Mayor’s candidate, he said: “I’m gay and that’s a good thing.”
