Coronavirus: Everything planned to start the field hospital in ExpoCoruña | Radio Coruña | Today for Today A Coruña

Everything is planned to start immediately the field hospital at the ExpoCoruña fairgrounds, according to the architect of the health area of A Coruña, José Manuel López Mihura. It will start from 240 beds but can be expanded up to 400. The implementation of this infrastructure aims to be a response to the increase in the number of patients admitted by coronavirus at the University Hospital of A Coruña.

What will the hospitalization be like?

The beds installed in the field hospital will be used for hospitalization of coronavirus patients in the conditions in which they would be in the plant. The Intensive Care Units (ICU) will be maintained in the different hospital centers.

from university residence to residence for toilets

The Provincial Council of A Coruña, the Council and the University will transfer the Elvira Bao university residence to the health area of A Coruña for Sergas personnel who for any reason need temporary alternative accommodation for the duration of the Covid-19 crisis. The residence has 60 rooms that will be used individually. The other part of the facilities had already been transferred to the firefighters, who have located one of their intervention units there, isolated from the rest to avoid possible infections.

José Manuel Mihura, the architect of the CHUAC, notes that 10-square-meter mini-rooms are to be designed to guarantee the privacy of the patients: “Some rooms will be designed in which it is possible to be seen but at the same time have some privacy, although they can be observed by the nursing staff.” They will have double closing of screen at medium height and curtain.

The emergency chief of the O Salnés Hospital, José Manuel Vázquez Lima, points out that it will be necessary one medical professional for every 15 patients and one nurse for every ten, in three shifts. At this time, professionals from other specialties are already joining to care for patients with coronavirus.

“Probably the direct attention can be through doctors from other specialties and who have knowledge, they are doctors who, following a strict protocol, can perfectly carry out this function,” he explains.

Very strict sanitary protocols

The field hospital must be built with very strict sanitary protocols. It must have pipes to carry oxygen or vacuum to the different beds, hot and cold water, a computer network and electrical installations.

You will need to have a space for nursing controls to access the beds. The accesses of the professionals should prevent those who leave and those who enter from coming into contact.

The access network must be perfectly delimited and with an ambulance wheel that can flow in and out smoothly.

Feijóo announced it this Tuesday

The President of the Xunta, Alberto Núñez Feijóoconfirmed this Tuesday that the Multiusos do Sar sports complex and venue in Santiago would soon be installed as field hospitals. Likewise, conditioning the Vigo Fair Institute (Ifevi) for the same purpose is not ruled out.

In an online appearance, Feijóo, who participated in the last clinical committee activated in the Community on the occasion of the coronavirus health crisis, explained that, after visits and technical planning, the objective is that the most urgent reinforcement hospital installed in Expocoruña “this weekend or early next week”

Feijóo has remarked that these field hospitals will be used, exhausted the resources and beds that both public and private healthcare can offer. Beds installed in field hospitals will be used for hospitalization, but not for intensive care units (ICUs). And the objective is for the different health areas to attend “with their resources” to these new plants enabled to serve COVID-19 patients.

Last week, the mayor of A Coruña, Inés Rey, had already indicated that ExpoCoruña would be the most suitable facility for a field hospital, but that, in any case, it offered any municipal facility that the Xunta might need to cope with the expansion of the coronavirus.
