Coronavirus: drop in new hospital admissions and average infections (infographic)

Lhe average number of daily coronavirus infections is down again, with 2,378 new daily cases over the period from December 16 to 22 (-6% compared to the previous calculation period), according to the latest data published on Saturday. by the Sciensano Public Health Institute. At least 637,246 cases of Covid-19 have been diagnosed in Belgium since the start of the epidemic.

During the seven-day period studied, 16,649 new cases were diagnosed: 10,029 (60%) in Flanders, 5,091 (31%) in Wallonia, including 134 cases for the German-speaking community, and 1,257 (8%) in Brussels.

Over the same period, an average of 87.7 people died daily from the coronavirus (-9%), i.e. a total of 614 deaths (418 in Flanders, 158 in Wallonia and 38 in Brussels). Since the start of the pandemic in March, 19,089 deaths have been recorded.

2,283 people hospitalized due to Covid-19

From December 19 to 25, 173 new admissions were recorded on average each day (-7%). Thus, 1,211 patients with laboratory-confirmed Covid-19 were hospitalized and 1,401 people left the hospital. The number of people currently hospitalized for Covid-19 therefore stood at 2,283 on Saturday morning, including 511 in intensive care. More than 300 patients required respiratory support and 43 extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

Overall, nearly 39,000 tests were performed daily from December 16 to December 22, with a positivity rate of 7.4%.

The incidence from December 9 to 22 is 299 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants, while the reproduction rate is 0.95.
