About 25% of cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection among residents of Los Angeles County, where the spread of the Delta strain was recorded, occurred in fully vaccinated residents from May to July 25. This data published in the weekly report CDC show an increase in so-called breakthrough infections among fully vaccinated individuals.
These numbers apply to more than 43,000 reported infections among Los Angeles County residents aged 16 and over. Of these, 10,895, or 25.3%, occurred in fully vaccinated individuals, 1431, or 3.3%, in partially vaccinated individuals, and 30,801, or 71.4%, in unvaccinated individuals.
At the same time, the report says vaccines protect people from more severe cases of the disease. According to the study, 3.2% of fully vaccinated individuals infected with the virus were hospitalized and only 0.05% were admitted to an intensive care unit. Also 0.25% were placed on mechanical ventilation.
Among unvaccinated individuals, 7.5% were hospitalized, 1.5% were admitted to the intensive care unit, and 0.5% required ventilators.
In addition to the Los Angeles County data, the CDC on Tuesday released an update on the HEROES study among healthcare professionals. It showed a significant decrease in the effectiveness of the vaccine among vaccinated medical personnel in eight states.
According to the report, the effectiveness of the vaccine during the study period, when the Delta strain predominated, dropped to 66%. 91% of the effectiveness of the vaccine was fixed before the appearance of this strain.
