(Belga) During the period that a curfew was imposed in the Netherlands in the fight against the corona virus, from the beginning of this year to the end of April, more sexual violence among young people took place. This is shown by research by the expertise centers Rutgers and Soa Aids Nederland.
8 percent of the girls experienced sexual violence during the curfew, compared to 3 percent for boys. That is more than during the following summer period (girls 5 percent, boys 1 percent). There was also more cross-border behavior online during the curfew. Young people received more unwanted sexually explicit images and requests. “We have seen for years that far too much sexual violence is taking place,” says director Ton Coenen of Rutgers. “That violence increased during the curfew period is even more worrisome.” Sexual violence usually took place in the young people’s home, in the perpetrator’s home, at a party or when going out. The Rutgers and Soa Aids Nederland survey was conducted in September among nearly 2,500 young people between the ages of 16 and 24. (Belgium)
