New York is on “break” until May 15, 2020
- New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced that New York State will remain “on hiatus” until May 15, 2020. A measure that applies to New York City and all New York State.
- The governor does not use the term “containment” but the result is the same. “Non-essential workers must continue to stay at home and the rules of social distancing are maintained,” writes the governor. Shops, schools, universities, museums, cinemas, monuments, sports halls and places of entertainment obviously remain closed.
- Another important announcement: As of Friday, April 17, 2020, all New Yorkers over the age of 2 will be required to wear a face mask in public places and public transport.
Other US states extend containment
- The Governor of New York specifies that this extension was decided in concert with several other states on the American East Coast, in particular New Jersey, Connecticut and Delaware.
- The decision angered the President of the United States. Donald Trump is campaigning for a rapid recovery of the American economy. On his Twitter account, the American President is also increasing attacks on the governor of New York, accused of wanting to make decisions alone. “Cuomo called every day, even hourly, begging for everything that should have been New York State’s responsibility, like new hospitals, beds, ventilators, etc. I did everything for him and for everyone, and now he seems to want independence! - The coronavirus crisis is hitting New York very hard. As of April 17, 2020, the city had more than 123,000 cases of Covid-19 and nearly 12,000 deaths.
