The government is tightening more and more nightlife regulations and places of sociality, to try to counter the new epidemic wave from Covid-19: stop the supply of take-away alcohol from 21, as well as gatherings outside bars, wineries, pubs and restaurants, closing of the premises at 24, total block at parties in public places and also at private ones, limit to diners in restaurants. These are just some of the rules that will be contained in the next Dpcm.
Coronavirus, Capua on the nightlife: the proposal
Precisely on the new rules aimed at limiting the nightlife, the virologist Ilaria Capua, director of the One Health Center of Excellence at the University of Florida, proposes, in an interview with Corriere della Sera, to find a way to rethink the evening outings in places of leisure and entertainment.
The researcher says she agrees on the new measures and explains why “these are situations in which we tend to be without a mask and speak loudly. Let us remember that yelling and singing are the best ways to spread the virus. The move it must be reinvented, otherwise the virus will continue to circulate among young adults: some of them will reach the severe form of the infection. Furthermore, young people can infect relatives, friends and colleagues over the years. For a while, certain things cannot be done, we have to look for alternative, creative solutions. It can also be seen under the economic aspect: a patient in intensive care costs the health system about 100 thousand euros“.
If nightlife is one of the factors responsible for the increasing spread of infections from Covid-19, Ilaria Capua instead raises schools from blame: “In Italy we are fortunate to have opened them after other European countries and therefore with a certain awareness of that that could happen. Viral circulation in schools is there, but it is not the cause of the explosion of infections “.
Faced with the new picture that is taking shape in this new phase of the coronavirus epidemic, the virologist still tries to express a message of optimism: “I want to see the positive side of this catastrophe. The public health measures we have learned should not be forgotten – concludes Capua – and this must be a commitment of the scientific community: wash your hands, get vaccinated against the flu. We then have the opportunity to rethink some great systems in the name of sustainability: mobility, work, health. We will have to create more resilient living environments ”.
