Coronavirus: – Belgium fears infection tsunami

Monday morning, Belgium’s health minister Frank Vandenbroucke warns that the country could be hit by a contagion tsunami. As a result, the health authorities have decided to close all restaurants and bars for one month.

The measures come after a partial shutdown in the capital Brussels was not enough to strike a new wave. The country is considered the second worst affected in Europe with 756.9 infected per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days. Only the Czech Republic is hit harder by 858.6, according to the European Infection Control Agency.

Infectious tsunami

The Minister of Health describes the infection situation in southern Belgium and Brussels as the worst and most dangerous in all of Europe.

– We are the hardest hit region in all of Europe. We’re really close to a tsunami that will cause us to lose control. Today we can still control the outcome, but it is extremely difficult and requires enormous amounts of work.

– If the number of cases of infection continues to rise, then the number of admissions will reach a level where we will have to postpone more and more treatment that can not be linked to covid-19, which is also very dangerous. The government has only one message for the people: Protect yourself and your loved ones, so that you will not be infected.

From midnight, the closure of restaurants and bars will begin, which also means a nightly curfew to prevent the party from being moved out into the streets.
