Coronavirus, AstraZeneca | Researchers claim to have found a solution to the blood clots

Believes the AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines can be used again, with some modifications.

German researchers claim they know how to avoid the blood clots that have arisen in connection with the AstraZeneca and Janssen vaccines.

It’s the big newspaper Financial Times who reports this late Wednesday night.

The problem with the vaccines is the adenovirus vectors that both vaccines use, according to Rolf Marschalek, a professor at the Goethe University in Frankfurt, who has led a research work on the rare side effects since March.

The two vaccines send the spike protein into the cell nucleus, instead of the cytosolic fluid in the cell. Once in the nucleus, certain parts of the spike protein are joined together. This is the beginning of what causes the rare blood clots, according to Marschalek.

The BioNTech / Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, on the other hand, never enter the cell nucleus, he says. He believes there is an easy way to prevent the spike protein from splicing, namely by changing its sequence.

“With the data we have in our hands, we can tell companies how to mutate these sequences, and code the spike protein in a way that prevents unintended reactions,” Marschalek told the Financial Times.

Johnson & Johnson has already contacted the German university to ask for guidance, according to Marschalek, who adds that the latter’s vaccine already has less chance of being spliced than AstraZeneca’s vaccine.

Some researchers, who among other things have called for a causal chain, have warned that Marschalek’s theory is one among many, and that there is a need for further evidence to substantiate his claims, writes the Financial Times.
