Coronavirus and now norovirus: what are the symptoms of the disease that strikes children | Chronicle

We still have not managed to overcome the Covid-19 pandemic that another virus already puts the world’s communities on alert. An outbreak of Norovirus in Sichuan province, China, has already infected 50 children, with which aroused enormous concern.

This disease, which is usually especially active between the months of November and April (in the winter of the Northern Hemisphere), causes a severe gastroenteritis, which although not usually serious, in children, babies and the elderly can be seriously affected. In addition, it presents the complexity that someone who has already passed the disease can contract it again.

Norovirus, which is a Norwalk-type virus, stands out for being extremely contagious, causing vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, nausea, muscle aches, headaches and fever. As with Covid-19, in risk groups norovirus can be fatal. There are also people who are asymptomatic, therefore the contagion becomes imminent and easily spreads in humans.

How is norovirus spread? The form of transmission is simple: social interaction and contact with surfaces or food contaminated by norovirus. In addition, it is a very contagious disease, so it is important to diagnose the disease quickly to cut the chain of transmission.

In the case of norovirus it is especially important pay attention to food hygiene, especially fruits, vegetables and seafood.

The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention points out that there is no medicine to cure norovirus so it is recommended to drink plenty of water to balance the loss of fluids caused by gastroenteritis and vomiting.
