Coronavirus. Algeria tightens restrictions in the face of second wave

Algeria adopted new restrictions on Sunday to contain the rapid spread of Covid-19, by closing sports halls, leisure areas and beaches after an outbreak of contamination.

The government has reported a “Phase of concern” of the pandemic, by inviting Algerians to “More mobilization and discipline to curb the spread of the epidemic”.

Imposed curfew

He extended the curfew imposed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. (7 p.m.-04 HGMT) to 32 wilayas (prefectures) out of 48.

It also decided to close for 15 days, starting on Tuesday, “Sports halls, sports halls, places for yachting, relaxation, recreational and leisure areas, beaches, youth centers, and cultural centers”, according to the services of the Prime Minister.

During this period, some businesses will have to cease all activity from 3 p.m. (2 p.m. GMT), in particular sellers of household appliances and hairdressing salons, a statement said.

Cafés and restaurants are now required to limit their activities to take-out and are subject to the obligation to close at 3 p.m.

68,000 cases in the country

Algeria, one of the African countries most affected by the pandemic, almost every day breaks the record for daily contaminations (867 on November 13).

Nearly 68,000 cases of infection have been identified in the country since the registration of the first case on February 25, including more than 2,100 deaths, according to the latest report from the Ministry of Health.

In addition, the government recalled the ban on all gatherings – especially on the occasion of weddings and circumcisions, but also political demonstrations – which “Are factors in the spread of the epidemic”.

The borders have been closed since March 17.
