“We are on the threshold of 10,000 cases,” said the Mayor of New York on Sunday. Bill de Blasio spoke of a shocking number in the “epicenter” of the corona pandemic in the US and warned of a “new reality” that would last for weeks or months.

With just under nine million inhabitants, the largest city in the USA comes with around a third of the recorded Covid-19 cases in the United States. In the particularly affected US state of New York, the number of infected people rose to almost 15,800 by Sunday evening (local time), according to Johns Hopkins University, 117 people in the state have already died of Covid-19. More tests have caused the number of corona cases in New York to skyrocket in the past few days.

De Blasio appealed to the citizens of New York to keep their distance from one another and to keep walks and necessary shopping to a minimum. Gatherings of people in parks or on playgrounds are not allowed. From Sunday evening, shopping centers, hairdressing salons, libraries and other “non-vital” facilities “had to close.

Exit restrictions have been in place for the 19 million residents of New York State since Friday. Most companies are only allowed to let their employees work from home. Schools, museums, cinemas and many shops have been closed for days.
