Coronation of King Charles III began on Saturday, May 6 at 12.00 Polish time at Westminster Abbey. The coronation does not change the status of the monarch – Charles III took the throne upon the death of Elizabeth II, i.e. on September 8, 2022, and two days later the Accession Council, convened for this purpose, proclaimed this fact. The coronation is, Buckingham Palace explains, “an occasion for fun and celebration, but it is also a solemn religious ceremony.”
After the anointing and coronation of King Charles III of Great Britain, his wife Camilla was anointed and crowned. Buckingham Palace has already hinted that the “queen consort” Camilla will now be simply “queen”.
Camilla was crowned with Maria Teck’s 1911 crown, the first time in almost 300 years that a monarch’s wife used an existing crown rather than a specially made one, albeit slightly modified.

The climax of the coronation
The king, sitting on the coronation throne, was put on armor, stole, golden coronation cloak, glove and ring. The archbishop then placed the crown of St. Edward. At that moment, the assembled shouted “God save the king!”. This is the only moment in the life of the monarch when he wears the crown of St. Edward.
The newly crowned King Charles III of Great Britain was enthroned and took the oath of allegiance from the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby and the heir to the throne, Prince William.
This part of the coronation ceremony has been modified. In the past, all members of the royal family and the House of Lords knelt before the monarch and swore allegiance to him, but now only the Archbishop of Canterbury on behalf of the Church of England and the heir to the throne did so.
Instead, Welby urged those gathered at the temple and those watching the broadcast to join this oath, saying: “I swear that I will be faithful to Your Majesty and your heirs and successors according to law. So help me God.”
