SARS-COV-2 has a preference for people with blood type A. At least this is how one could interpret the results of a recent laboratory study from the USA.
For your study In the laboratory, the researchers examined how the virus affected blood and airway cells of people with the Blood types A, B or 0 responds. To do this, the researchers first isolated the receptor binding domain (RBD) of the virus and left it on various Antigens meet that on Erythrocytes and on airway cells of people of blood groups A, B and 0.
As it turned out, the virus’s RBD docked better with the A antigens of airway cells. Type A antigens are found in people with blood type A.
Several appeared in the past year Investigations which show that people with blood group A are more likely to have a severe course of COVID-19 than people with blood group 0. The laboratory study could provide an explanation for this.
However, caution is advised at this point: “These associations that are found there are of a statistical nature”, warns Epidemiologist Jürgen May from the Bernhard Nocht Institute. “So we find that, for example, a certain blood group is more frequently paired with a severe course of a certain infection than other blood groups. But that is not yet the proof that there is a causal connection. “
