SARS-COV-2 has a preference for people with blood type A. At least this is how one could interpret the results of a recent laboratory study from the USA.
For your study In the laboratory, the researchers examined how the virus affected blood and airway cells of people with the Blood types A, B or 0 responds. As it turned out, the virus’s RBD docked better with the A antigens of airway cells. Type A antigens are found in people with blood type A.
Several appeared in the past year Investigations which show that people with blood group A are more likely to have a severe course of COVID-19 than people with blood group 0. The laboratory study could provide an explanation for this.
However, caution is advised at this point: “These associations that are found there are of a statistical nature”, warns Epidemiologist Jürgen May from the Bernhard Nocht Institute. “So we find that, for example, a certain blood group is more frequently paired with a severe course of a certain infection than other blood groups. But that is not yet the proof that there is a causal connection. “
