Note on the military column – right of way
The military definition “Defender Europe 20” also brings many vehicles and columns to German roads. But how do drivers behave correctly when they encounter such a vehicle association? By the way, a column can be recognized by the fact that the participating vehicles all have a blue flag on the driver’s side except for the tail light. The last one has a green flag. It can also carry a flashing yellow light or a warning sign.
If vehicles are traveling in a column, they are considered to be one vehicle under traffic law and can always remain together, according to the ADAC. If, for example, the first vehicle can still make it through green at traffic lights, everyone can drive in the association. Even if the traffic light has already switched to red. Other road users must observe this special right, possibly stopping at green. Others must not interrupt the column. This special right also applies to roundabouts, crosswalks, crossroads and zipper procedures. “Squeezing in” is taboo, according to the ADAC.
The Bundeswehr said in a leaflet that “strictly speaking” also applies when driving onto the motorway. If there is a 100 meter distance between the individual vehicles, you can move up quickly and leave the column “at the next opportunity”.
overtaking in one go is allowed
It is allowed to overtake columns, but it has to be done in one go. Again: no squeezing in between, the entire bandage has to be done in one go. Surely this is almost only possible on highways or other multi-lane roads.
The legislature does not prescribe how long a column may be. However, there must be enough space left for the other road users. Rescue workers and emergency services form a new column from 15 vehicles, according to the Bundeswehr. The upcoming exercise awaits columns with lengths of 5 to a maximum of 20 vehicles.
