Corona virus: Microsoft needs to restrict some Azure services and teams

In its Azure cloud, operator Microsoft sees up to 775 percent increases in usage rates in those states that rely on so-called social distancing or exit restrictions to contain the corona crisis and Covid-19. The provider writes on his Azure blog and also lists some restrictions for its users with which this massive increase is to be cushioned somewhat.

There are now limits to the free entry and test offers. Instead, the available computing capacity should be available primarily for existing paying customers. Likewise, some resources for new contracts should initially be restricted, as it says in the announcement. Microsoft points out, however, that this is a soft quota. This means that customers can at least have these restrictions increased via a support ticket. If this cannot be implemented immediately, customers should switch to another region.

It came two weeks ago in Microsoft’s video chat teams again and again to some failures, which are probably due to the significantly increased demand. Here, too, the provider now reacts with slight restrictions. The service now has 44 million daily active users who together conduct more than 900 million minutes of video meetings and calls each day. In order to better manage this growth, teams will in future query the status of users less frequently and also increase the interval at which it is shown that the other person is writing something. The video resolution should also be adjusted. However, this should not have a major impact on usage.

In addition to adapting its own services, Microsoft also wants to significantly increase its available capacities. This should be available in the coming weeks. However, Microsoft does not want to completely rule out possible problems with the recommended change to another region or the recommended changes on the part of customers. As before, customers should then be informed via the Azure service health dashboard.
