President United States of America (AS) Donald Trump faced bipartisan pressure to set an example by wearing a mask in the middle of a pandemic Corona virus (COVID-19) which is increasingly rampant. Pressure also arises from Republicans who are usually reluctant to criticize Trump.
As reported AFPOn Monday (6/29/2020), the number of cases of Corona virus has increased sharply in more than half of the US states, even reaching new record highs after several months of efforts to reduce Corona unevenly applied in the US and sometimes colored by contradictory messages from the government .
The southern and western US territories, which opened up the economy earlier, were the worst affected. But with the latest surge in cases, the total number of Corona cases in the US now exceeds 2.5 million cases and the total number of deaths exceeds 125 thousand people. This situation triggers broader calls for more stringent enforcement of rules.
The US Secretary of Health and Human Services, Alex Azar, has warned that a ‘closed window’ to control the explosion of Corona transmission in US states is led by conservative groups.
“This is a very, very serious situation and a closed window for us to take action and control this,” Azar said in an interview with CNN.
Azar was asked about why Trump refused to wear masks in public and became an example – even when he was standing next to his health advisor who always seemed to wear a mask. He only reiterated the White House’s explanation about Trump routinely tested Corona every day and called Trump in a ‘unique position’ as a world leader.
