Corona virus break: Bad prospects for Bundesliga fans

The last Bundesliga game is less than two weeks old, but fans can hardly wait for the break to end. But it could take some time before football is back. Virologists give little reason to hope.

The stadiums are empty, the fans at home and the commentators are concerned with the Drama of everyday life. German football is in an exceptional situation due to the coronavirus pandemic, the duration of which is difficult to estimate.

Many fans hope to see football again at the end of April, even if it were just ghost games. There is still hope for normal games. Leading virologists consider this to be completely unlikely. They take away all hope of a timely stadium experience from the fans.

“This is superfluous”

Prof. Alexander Kekulé said in the ARD sports show: “If I were now a football advisor, I would say that someday it could improve in September, but most likely not beforehand.” He even ruled out games with fans for the entire calendar year 2020: “Large events that bring 60,000 people together in a stadium, I actually don’t see them this year either.”

Prof. Christian Drosten, chief virologist at Charité Berlin, struck exactly the same notch: He doesn’t “believe at all that we’ll be filling football stadiums again in the foreseeable future. That is superfluous. It will be until next year at this time to not give.”

Prof. Jonas Schmidt-Chanasit from the Bernhard Nocht Institute expressed it even more drastically. In the NDR sports club, he said: “It is not realistic that the season can end. (…) And even if it doesn’t hit us badly, that doesn’t mean that football can start again Because that would of course lead to a significant worsening of the situation again, “he warned and added:” That means that we are certainly talking about a period that can be reached at the earliest next year. “
