A new corona variant called XEC is spreading. As “T-Online” reports, XEC was first detected in Germany in June.
The variant was created by the fusion of two omicron subvariants. XEC has an additional mutation on the spike protein.
This could increase the virus’s ability to dock onto human cells. According to “Morgenpost”, XEC has already been detected in 27 countries.
Corona variant XEC will soon become dominant
US scientist Eric Topol believes that XEC will take the lead among the variants. However, it will probably take a few weeks until then.

The symptoms of an XEC infection are similar to those of previous variants, but are said to be more flu-like. “Focus” writes about fever, cough, headaches and body aches.
Heartburn can now also occur in those affected. Nevertheless, according to the RKI, the risk to public health should still be low.
