The coronavirus will mutate within a year to such an extent that most vaccines currently in use will no longer be effective. That is the estimate of a majority of 76 epidemiologists from 28 countries, who were questioned last month by civil society organizations Oxfam Novib and the People’s Vaccine Alliance.
Their survey found that 88 percent of scientists surveyed believe that the persistently low vaccination coverage in many countries will eventually lead to a resistant variety of the virus. 66 percent of the respondents think this will happen within a year.
The biggest problem, according to the scientists surveyed, is that the vaccines that are already being made are not available for many developing countries. The pharmaceutical companies that developed the vaccines have the exclusive right to production, which creates scarcity.
