(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Jeong Yun-ju = Victims who lost their lives or suffered side effects after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine and their bereaved families voluntarily demolished the incense burner that had been operating at Cheonggye Plaza in Jung-gu, Seoul for about 2 years and 9 months.

According to the COVID-19 Vaccine Victims’ Family Council (Kobaekhoe) and Jung-gu Office on the 18th, they voluntarily dismantled one tent that served as a joint incense burner at Cheonggye Square around 11 a.m. that day and organized the portrait photos placed inside the incense burner.

So far, the bereaved families have insisted that the incense burner cannot be demolished until the Special Act on Support for Vaccine Victims is enacted.

Regarding the reason for the demolition, the bereaved families explained that the decision was made after the Jung-gu Office pointed out that the incense burner was occupying Cheonggye Plaza without permission and took measures such as imposing compensation.

In a phone call with Yonhap News, Kobaekhoe Chairman Kim Doo-kyung said, “The Jung-gu Office said that if it did not voluntarily demolish it, it would have no choice but to impose compensation and take administrative action. The victims were grieving, but they could not overcome the district office, so they voluntarily demolished it.”

The Jung-gu Office stated that the decision was made as a result of persuading Kobaek Association and meeting with Kobaek Association for a long period of time to discuss the matter.

According to the district office, the compensation paid so far for unauthorized installation of tents amounts to approximately 112 million won. However, as Kobaekhoe submitted a written opinion stating that it would voluntarily remove the tent by the 11th, the actual amount of the charge may be adjusted depending on variables such as the discretion of the district office or the judgment of the installation period.

Kobaekhoe plans to continue its activities by setting up a joint incense burner in a tent near the National Assembly Station in Yeouido-dong and placing portraits of 75 people.

Chairman Kim asserted, “We are citizens who have been vaccinated according to government policy, and only when relief is provided to the victims can the quarantine be said to have been 100% successful,” and added, “For us, the pandemic is not over yet.”

He cried, saying, “Among the victims who are still alive, the seriously ill patients are dying without receiving treatment.” He added, “Based on the experience of the person who passed away first, members ask each other, ‘Should we be receiving life-sustaining treatment?'” he said, crying.

Chairman Kim suffered from quadriplegia when his son received the COVID-19 vaccine in early 2021.

Previously, in January 2022, when COVID-19 was prevalent, the Kovac Association erected two tents and placed a portrait at Cheonggye Plaza and advocated for the National Assembly to pass the Act on Support for Vaccine Victims there.

However, the Jung-gu Office requested the Kobaek Association to voluntarily remove the tent, claiming that the joint incense burner was illegal, and the Kobaek Association voluntarily removed one of the two tents last May.
