The United Kingdom is the first country in the world to give the green light for the use of that vaccine. The UK government agreed to a recommendation from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to approve and use the vaccine.
Health Minister Matt Hancock calls the approval fantastic news. He says 50 hospitals are ready to receive the drug. Large vaccination centers are also being set up. “Early next week, we are going to launch a program to vaccinate people in this country against Covid-19,” the minister told Sky News. The Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine is said to be 95 percent effective at fighting the virus.
Hancock recognizes that the use of the vaccine comes with logistical challenges. According to him, the agent must be stored at minus 70 degrees, for example. The minister says that the most vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and people in care homes, will be vaccinated. The death toll from corona in the UK is almost 60,000 with more than 1.6 million infections.
Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla says that with the approval, the UK government is taking swift action to protect its population and expects more approvals for the vaccine. Applications for approval are still pending with the European and American drug authorities. The vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech may be given the green light later this month in the United States and the European Union.
