Three vaccines, millions of vaccinations in Germany – in its safety report on side effects, the Paul Ehrlich Institute states: 0.3 out of 1000 vaccine doses were suspected of having serious side effects.
Serious side effects after corona vaccinations are still the absolute exception. After almost nine million vaccinations, the Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI), which is responsible for safety, named a rate of 0.3 per 1000 vaccine doses. Vaccinations are “an effective measure to contain the corona pandemic and protect yourself from the corona virus,” says the latest safety report.
According to the Robert Koch Institute, 8.8 million vaccinations had been carried out by March 12: around seven million with BioNTech / Pfizer, almost 300,000 with Moderna and 1.5 million with AstraZeneca. Suspected side effects or vaccination complications were reported 19,194 times: 10,500 times for the BioNTech / Pfizer vaccine, 7663 times with AstraZeneca and 736 times with Moderna.
Serious adverse reactions were reported 2,287 times. According to the PEI, side effects “in which people are treated in hospital or reactions that have been classified as medically significant” are considered serious. 1728 of these concerned BioNTech / Pfizer, 113 Moderna and 352 AstraZeneca.
In percentage terms, i.e. in relation to the inoculated doses, fewer serious suspected cases were reported after vaccinations with AstraZeneca than with the other two vaccines.
14 suspected cases of sinus vein thrombosis
After the temporary stop of vaccinations with AstraZeneca, reports of sinus vein thrombosis in particular were expected. According to the PEI, 14 such suspected cases had been reported by March 19. Two patients died.
Two other suspected cases were reported after vaccination with the BioNTech / Pfizer vaccine. “Further investigations are currently being carried out to clarify the possible connection with the vaccination,” said the PEI.
Since the start of the vaccination campaign, the Paul Ehrlich Institute has been reported to have suspected deaths a total of 351 times. The deceased had been vaccinated between a few hours and 40 days earlier. 286 cases involved a vaccination with BioNTech / Pfizer, four each with Moderna and four AstraZeneca, in the others the vaccine was not known. According to the PEI, most of those affected had “partly multiple previous illnesses”.
Different complaints with the vaccines
The complaints differ between the three manufacturers: while injection site pain, headache and fatigue were the most common reports according to BioNTech / Pfizer, flu-like illnesses, chills and fever were mainly reported after vaccination with AstraZeneca. A skin rash as an undesirable reaction was noticed in Moderna.
