The University Hospital in Tübingen and the Medical Institute in Reutlingen have collected data from more than 1,000 people regarding their corona vaccinations and any side effects that may occur.
The results were published in the journal Viruses published. Side effects and changes in antibodies after the first, second and third vaccination with different vaccines were recorded. The 1,046 people examined are all employees of the clinic in Tübingen or the institute in Reutlingen.
women and young people
The conclusion: test subjects who were younger than 45 years of age experienced side effects more frequently, as did women. This applies to local side effects such as redness, swelling at the injection site as well as systemic side effects such as nausea, fatigue, diarrhea, headaches or fever.
Study participants with skin diseases had more local side effects. People with circulatory diseases suffered more from systemic side effects.
Many had pain at the injection site
After the first vaccination, 78 percent of the study cohort reported at least one local side effect. The most common side effect was pain at the injection site, reported by 73 percent of study participants.
At least one systemic side effect was reported by 72 percent of study participants. The most common side effect was fatigue, reported by 62 percent of participants. Systemic side effects were reported by 88 percent of participants who received Astra Zeneca as their first vaccine.
In contrast, the percentage of participants with systemic side effects was 60 percent and 57 percent after receiving Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.
Differences in respective vaccines
“Our results show that after the first vaccination, mostly local side effects occurred with the mRNA vaccines BioNTech/Pfizer and Moderna, while systemic side effects were more frequent and severe with the vector vaccine from Astra Zeneca,” the study authors said.
At the second and third stitches, there were more side effects with Moderna than with Pfizer.
In general, the researchers emphasize that vaccination is one of the most important measures to contain the pandemic and, like all other vaccines, side effects can occur.
