The US has given Biontech and Pfizer’s corona vaccine emergency approval. According to the manufacturer, it offers 95 percent protection against Covid-19. But while lung disease deaths continue to rise in the United States, in some parts of the United States, like here in rural West Virginia, there is still widespread skepticism and opposition to a vaccine – often fueled by conspiracy narratives.

The widespread acceptance of such untenable claims is new to doctors in sleepy towns in West Virginia, because US citizens here aren’t actually known for their vaccination skepticism – the vaccination rate is one of the highest in the country.

According to a nationwide survey by Reuters at the beginning of December, only 61 percent of US citizens want to be vaccinated, and the trend is falling – scientists assume that herd immunity is only achieved at 70 percent. The main reason for the skepticism is discomfort due to the short development time of the vaccine and the allegedly resulting risks.
US President Trump, on the other hand, assured that the vaccine was safe.

So it remains to be seen whether the reservations will pass after the introduction of the vaccine, or whether they will become a major obstacle to fighting the pandemic.
