Corona infections in Munich could increase sharply during the Oktoberfest. Wastewater data shows the highest value since the beginning of the year.
Munich – The latest wastewater samples München indicate a significant increase in corona infections in the Bavarian capital. The latest reading, published on the Bavarian wastewater monitoring website on Tuesday, is the highest since the beginning of the year and shows a more than double increase compared to the previous week. The sample came from last Wednesday.
Corona and Oktoberfest: Values in the wastewater suggest spread
It is not clear whether the increase is due to the Oktoberfest, which has been taking place for a week and a half. An increasing trend could already be seen before the festival began. However, it is likely that the festival contributes to the spread of the virus, as a steep corona wave has developed in Munich during Oktoberfest in the last two years.
In 2023, the so-called Oktoberfest wave in Munich’s wastewater levels was significantly higher than the winter wave. If the pattern of previous years repeats, another significant increase in readings could be expected in the next few days.
