06.39 a.m.: Bavaria wants improvements for nursing staff

Bavaria’s Minister of Health Klaus Holetschek (CSU) has proposed a permanent care reserve and tax breaks for employees to improve the care situation in Bavaria. “We have to have more people, more heads in the system, I think that’s essential,” said Holetschek of the German press agency.

It is conceivable, for example, to make surcharges tax free. The taxpayer would then have to bear the costs. “I want us to talk about the value of care and to reassure ourselves socially what we want,” said the minister. There are only two directions: Either go to long-term care insurance or to a tax subsidy. The nursing profession must be given more competencies and developed into a real occupation in health care. “The fact is that we can’t go on like this.”

The demand for nurses on the Bavarian labor market is unbroken, said the head of the Bavarian regional directorate of the Federal Employment Agency, Ralf Holtzwart. “We see that the need for skilled nurses cannot be met by a long way,” he said. That means significantly higher investments in the long term.

At present, 2,800 people in Bavaria are being trained as nurses by the employment agencies. However, nursing has also gained in importance in the Corona crisis, and nursing schools have seen an influx. Many young people wanted to achieve something meaningful.
