Corona ticker Lower Franconia: rallies in Würzburg

9.15 p.m.: The rallies in Würzburg are largely peaceful

In the evening, corona deniers and their opponents protested close together but largely peacefully in downtown Würzburg. The Green Youth had called for a rally on the market square. The organizers directed themselves against a rally also planned by the initiative “Citizens Stand Up”. Corona deniers and vaccination opponents gather behind this.

Shortly before the start of the event, however, the organizers of “Citizens stand up” canceled their announced action on the Würzburg Mainwiesen. Instead, they also headed for the market unannounced. The police estimate the size of the group at around 100 people. Few of them wore FFP2 masks during their gathering. In contrast, there were around 100 to 150 counter-demonstrators just a few meters away.

For about two hours, the action shifted over and over again across different areas of the Würzburg market square. Sometimes there was hostility among the participants. But “major disruptions” did not materialize, according to the Lower Franconia police.

In the evening, however, there was criticism of the officers’ actions from among the ranks of the counter-demonstrators. Local politician Sebastian Hansen (Greens) spoke on his Twitter account of an “announced, unannounced demo” of the corona deniers. He therefore saw a “violation of the assembly law,” against which the police did nothing. A spokesman for the Lower Franconia police initially did not want to comment on allegations regarding the tactics in the evening.
