In the state capital of Munich, a negative test result is required from this Monday, anyone who, for example, wants to be pampered with culinary delights in indoor restaurants and then sweat away the gourmet kilos in fitness studios or sports halls. Unless, of course, you have recovered from corona disease or have been fully vaccinated.
The Prime Ministers decided that almost two weeks ago. The 7-day incidence in Munich is currently 57.5 and thus above the important 35 mark. In relation to Bavaria, the Robert Koch Institute comes to a value of 41.3, for the whole of Germany the 7-day incidence is 56.4.
The value of corona patients in intensive care units is central
In addition to the incidence figures, which are decisive for the rules to be tightened again, the number of corona patients in the intensive care units is also central to the assessment of the situation. And the values are rising again: two weeks ago, on August 8, 2021, 429 people in Germany were in intensive care due to a corona disease. Currently the numbers are around 700, which corresponds to a percentage increase of 65 percent.
RKI: Low percentages of vaccinated intensive care patients
The vaccinated corona patients were According to the RKI, 76 people have been receiving intensive care medicine since the beginning of February due to a corona disease after likely vaccination breakthroughs. Converted to all corona intensive care patients, this is just around 0.76 percent. The percentage rate for probable breakthroughs in vaccinations among those hospitalized – without intensive medical care – has been around one percent for the period since the beginning of February.
For the RKI, the conclusion from the figures is clear: By far the largest part of the corona cases since the beginning of February affect non-vaccinated people. The vaccine effectiveness is almost 90 percent and thus confirms the assumed high effectiveness of the vaccines, according to the research facility. Nevertheless, it should be noted that the effectiveness of the vaccines could be overestimated due to the number of unreported cases of infected vaccinated people.
Intensive care doctor calls for third vaccination
The evaluation of the Cologne intensive care doctor Christian Karagiannidis, scientific head of the intensive care register of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive and Emergency Medicine (Divi), goes in a similar direction: He emphasizes that most Covid patients in German clinics do not have a corona vaccination: “We currently have 12 to 13 percent of Covid patients in clinics with vaccination protection in North Rhine-Westphalia,” said Karagiannidis. He calls for a third vaccination to be given to those who have a depressed immune system – for example, elderly people or people with previous illnesses. In his experience, it is mostly these cases that end up on the wards despite being vaccinated.
Overall, it is clear: the pandemic is picking up speed again. The fact that there are now more vaccination breakthroughs may also be due to the fact that in general more people are vaccinated than in spring. Jeffrey S. Morris, Professor of Biostatistics from the University of Pennsylvania, recently highlighted this connection for the corona situation in Israel. The main way out of the pandemic is and will be vaccinating the population as quickly as possible. The relatively few vaccination breakthroughs do not change that.
