Corona test for children? What applies in which holiday country – BZ Berlin

Summer vacation is coming soon and many Berlin families want to travel again. Those who have not yet been fully vaccinated or have recovered will still need the expensive PCR test to travel to many European countries.

It gets really expensive when the children have to do one too. A family with two children can quickly get a sum of 400 euros.

► How can the test costs be avoided?

On the one hand, you could choose travel destinations where antigen tests are also accepted for entry (e.g. Italy, Croatia, Austria, Poland). These are free in Germany.

On the other hand, depending on the country, there are big differences in the age from which children even need a negative corona test. In some countries, children do not have to show a negative corona test upon entry if their parents have been vaccinated, immune or tested negative.

In other countries, tests are sometimes compulsory from birth.

Here is an overview (the regulations are updated weekly, please inform yourself again before you travel):

► Travelers to France must show a negative PCR test (not older than 72 hours) – but children under the age of eleven are exempt from the regulation.

► In Austria, children under ten years of age are exempt from the obligation to test; after all, an antigen test is sufficient for their parents.

► Children under seven years of age do not have to show a corona test when traveling to Croatia if their parents have recovered, are fully vaccinated against corona or have a negative PCR or antigen test (not older than 48 hours).

► All persons aged five and over need a negative PCR test to enter Greece, and six or more in Spain.

► For Italy only small children under two years of age are exempt from the obligation.

► It gets even more absurd in Poland: Even babies have to take a corona test to enter the country.

► In Denmark there is a more relaxed view: Here, people under the age of 15 are exempt from the obligation to test.

Confusing? Yes! But redemption is near. Because a uniform EU solution is sought. To make traveling easier, several EU countries will be introducing the digital Corona passport from mid-June – vaccinations, proof of recovery and current tests are bundled there.

The EU Commission also recommends that children of vaccinated parents do not have to be quarantined when traveling. That would only be fair for families.
