Corona test end at Thuringian schools: Jena mayor speaks of a “short-sighted decision”

With a view to the infection rate at Jena’s schools, Mayor Christian Gerlitz sharply criticized the end of the corona tests in schools from Tuesday. Despite cases of infection at eight Jena schools during the two-week test phase, the Thuringian Ministry of Education rejects further voluntary test offers in the schools, said Gerlitz. It was a short-sighted decision that he was deeply disappointed with.

According to the information, Jena had previously asked the ministry to issue a general decree, in which the voluntary tests were not only provided for from warning level 1. The ministry rejected the general decree on the grounds that there was a lack of money for it.

Gerlitz sees the country as having a duty

According to Gerlitz, a low-threshold test offer is necessary for early detection of the occurrence of the infection – regardless of the incidence. In terms of infection protection law and also financially, the Free State is seen to be obliged to implement such an offer. On Tuesday, the Jena crisis team wants to discuss what other options there are for tests in the community facilities.

We are deeply disappointed with this short-sighted decision against running the school as safely as possible. Above all, the fact that the rejection of our general decree is justified solely by a lack of budget funds stunned me.

At the Thuringian schools, tests were carried out for two weeks after the start of the new school year. The voluntary test offer ends on Tuesday. Education Minister Helmut Holter had justified this, among other things, with the considerable costs of the mass tests. Instead, children and adolescents should be tested by family doctors and paediatricians for symptoms.
