On Saturday (31/7) Israel’s Ministry of Health reported the addition of 2,435 new daily coronavirus cases, the highest number since last March. The increase in corona cases in the country was driven by the detection of the more contagious Delta variant.
Meanwhile, there are 326 corona patients who have to be hospitalized, the highest number since last April. Israel hit a peak in cases in January with more than 2,000 people being hospitalized every day.
With this fact, in recent days, the Israeli government launched booster vaccine injections for older citizens, reinstated the indoor mask requirement and re-imposed the “green pass”, which requires a vaccine certificate to enter closed spaces such as gyms, restaurants, and public spaces. hotel.
Meanwhile, starting today (1/8), children aged 5-11 years who are at risk of developing health complications, are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz told Israeli TV station Channel 12 that the current rules are meant to balance public health with the economy.
“The economy has to keep going,” he said.
“I don’t want to impose a lockdown and I will avoid a lockdown at all costs. Everything is open – but now we need masks and vaccines.” he continued.
