Leading infectious disease expert in the United States (AS) Dr Anthony Fauci said his country had gone in the wrong direction in handling COVID-19. The reason is, the US is currently facing a spike in Corona cases.
Quoted from the BBC, Fauci said the transmission of COVID-19 was so high among people who had not been vaccinated. According to him, this is known from the high number of cases of infection with the Delta variant of the Corona virus, or B1617.2, in areas where vaccination coverage is still low.
“We’re heading in the wrong direction,” Fauci said on the program CNN ‘State of Union’ when asked about the prediction of Corona death cases in the US will reach 4,000 people per day if vaccination rates do not improve.
“We have 50 percent of states that haven’t been fully vaccinated. That’s a problem, especially if there is a variant like Delta that has extraordinary characteristics that can spread very efficiently and very easily from person to person,” he said, as quoted by the New York Post.
Previously every US citizen who had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 was allowed to remove a mask when in public. However, currently the policy is being reconsidered by health officials in the US to prevent the spread of the Corona virus varian Delta.
“This is under consideration,” Fauci said.
Fauci also explained that health officials in the US were reviewing the benefits of giving a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. He suggested that this booster injection be given to groups of people who have immune disorders.
It is known that more than 162.7 million, or 49 percent, of US citizens have been vaccinated COVID-19 fully. However, vaccination rates are still very low in some southern states.
The sharpest increase in Corona cases occurred in a number of states with low vaccination rates, such as Florida, Texas, and Missouri.
