Virologist Marion Koopmans, herself a member of the OMT, is pleased with the decision that large-scale corona testing is no longer necessary. “You can see it as a momentous step, so if people want to celebrate it I wish them a lot of fun with it.”
From now on we can treat Corona the same as common other respiratory infections. The large-scale test locations can also be scaled down from the OMT. And according to Koopmans, the home tests are no longer really necessary. “That’s up to the people themselves.”
The virus has become endemic, says the OMT. That means that the virus has lost its exceptional status. “Even in nursing homes, when people get corona, it is very often just a kind of cold.”
According to Koopmans, whether this also means an end to vaccinations is for the Health Council to decide. And Care Minister Kuipers has yet to make a decision whether to adopt the advice of the OMT.
