Corona quarantine in Göttingen: high-rise residents released from isolation

Only four positive results from 600 second tests: The corona outbreak in a Göttingen residential complex seems to be under control. The week-long quarantine ends for hundreds of residents. Admission controls and a free supply of food will continue to exist for the time being.

In Göttingen, Lower Saxony, the corona quarantine for a larger high-rise complex with around 700 residents ended after a week. The isolation of the affected facility had expired at midnight, the city said. The fence is currently being dismantled on one side. However, the fence still stands on another street – there are entry and exit checks to ensure that individual residents who still have a quarantine obligation do not leave the premises. From now on, only individual quarantines for infected people and contact persons as well as additional measures such as a mask requirement apply.

The aim of the quarantine was to limit the outbreak of infection with around 120 proven infections. The measures had had an effect, said the head of the Göttingen crisis team, Petra Broistedt. Lower Saxony’s Prime Minister Stephan Weil had praised the city’s crisis management. According to the city, a total of 600 secondary tests were carried out. Only four other people had a positive test result. These were contact persons for infected people in a family environment.

According to the city administration, the residents were provided with free meals and food. A medical treatment center was also established. These measures continue for the time being. The authorities also asked for donations for the residents.

According to the city, people live in precarious conditions, the apartments are only 19 to 39 square meters in size – some are families with four children. The residential complex was quarantined on June 18 in view of the many infections. Before that, there had been a major corona outbreak in another high-rise building in Göttingen, the Iduna complex.
