Corona police controls at the border with Poland | NDR.de – news

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the police checked travelers on the border with Poland on Saturday. Above all, the officials wanted to determine whether those entering the country were complying with the quarantine rules.

The reason for this is the high number of infections in the neighboring country and thus the risk that the virus will be introduced via cross-border commuters. The state government fears that not everyone will adhere to the entry rules. That is why around 30 state police officers, in cooperation with the federal police, checked motorists and pedestrians at the border crossings Garz, Ahlbeck and Linken (district of Vorpommern-Greifswald). After an initial assessment, the police advised the occupants of 66 cars – with reference to the obligation to quarantine on their return – from entering Poland. Ten more vehicles have already returned to the north-east from shopping in Poland. The police took their personal details and passed them on to the responsible health authorities. Those affected now have to go into quarantine. According to the police spokesman, around 180 vehicles were checked at several border crossings by noon on Saturday. There should be controls again in the coming days.

Quarantine for returnees from Poland

Anyone entering Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania from Poland must be in quarantine. This is what the current state corona ordinance stipulates for those arriving from risk areas. This means that anyone who travels to Poland shortly to refuel or shop has to isolate themselves for two weeks. There are exceptions, for example, for commuters. Only commuters who work on one side and live on the other and are therefore regularly tested are allowed to pass without quarantine.

Renz: Closing the border is out of the question

Closing the border due to the high number of infections in Poland is out of the question for Interior Minister Torsten Renz (CDU). With the controls at the border, he wants to raise people’s awareness of the entry rules and the quarantine regulations. However, in the coming days, the state police should increasingly check the city centers – for example, whether the distance rules are being observed. In the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald, which borders directly on Poland, the incidence value is currently more than 90 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants, in all of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern it is almost 80 (as of December 11).
