Corona passport mandatory in Italy | Currently Europe | DW

In Italy, the Corona health passport is mandatory in certain areas from this Friday. It must be shown when visiting indoor restaurants as well as in the cinema, museum or sports facilities located in buildings.

It will be mandatory for passengers on public transport on September 1st. This applies to domestic flights, trains and some ferry routes. Teachers in schools as well as teachers and students at universities must also show their passport. The relevant measures were adopted by the cabinet of Prime Minister Mario Draghi in Rome.

Known as the “Green Passport” in Italy, the document is issued to people who have received their first dose of corona vaccine, have recovered from COVID-19, or have tested negative for the virus.

Again and again, thousands of Italians demonstrated against the “Green Pass”, here in Milan at the end of July

There had been repeated demonstrations against the document in Italy in recent weeks. Health Minister Roberto Speranza said the pass would “avoid closures and protect freedom”. Italy was the first country in Europe to introduce mandatory vaccination for health workers.

Health passport also in France

A vaccination requirement in the healthcare system is now also in force in France. The Constitutional Council approved a law to tighten the corona requirements in large parts. The expansion of the regulations on the health passport and the mandatory vaccination can thus come into force on Monday as planned. In recent weeks there had been mass protests across France against the plans of the government of Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron.

Freedom - No to the health pass

The constitutional guardians came to the conclusion that the health passport was a “balanced” compromise solution between civil liberties in public space and health protection. The document provides information about a survived corona disease, a vaccination or a negative test.

As of Monday, the health passport must be presented in France when entering restaurants and cafés, trains, planes, long-distance coaches, health facilities, some shopping centers, trade fairs and fairs. It has been in effect for cultural and leisure facilities since July.

The opposition had tried to prevent the entire package of measures by calling in the Constitutional Council. Left-wing MPs see the principle of equality for all citizens in jeopardy. They pointed to the lower proportion of vaccinated people in poorer sections of the population and warned that the regulations would further exacerbate social inequality.
