The corona pandemic is far from over. New infections are becoming increasingly common, affecting younger people. According to this, people in the twenties, thirties and forties make up a growing proportion of newly reported corona cases, such as that «New York Times» reported.
In the US state of Arizona, for example, where crowds of corona drive-in test centers are particularly large, people between the ages of 20 and 44 make up around half of all cases tested positive for Corona. In the United States, the average age of corona sufferers in March was 65, but has now dropped to 35.
“This is really quite unsettling”
The situation in the state of Texas is even more serious. Young people there already make up more than half of those infected with corona. “This is really quite worrying,” says Joseph McCormick, professor of epidemiology at the UT School of Public Health in Brownsville. “It is clear that the proportion of younger people seems to have changed dramatically.”
The reason for the increase in younger newly infected people could have obvious reasons. Because in many US states, bars and restaurants have been reopened. In addition, many have returned to their office workplaces.
Crowds of young people promote corona spread
There is also a potential risk of infection as a result of the “Black Lives Matter” protests, which bring people together not only in the USA, but also worldwide to demonstrate. In addition, young people generally like to meet in sociable groups and the spread of the corona virus is thus promoted.
There is also the risk of infecting people who have not yet been infected. Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a department of the United States Department of Health, said there are an additional ten infections for every corona case reported.
An increased transmission of the virus
Experts warned that the apparently new disease cluster among young people may be due in part to more widely available tests. Nevertheless, an increasing number of people admitted to hospitals were also recorded in the US states of North Carolina and Texas. This in turn indicates an increased transmission of the virus.
There are now over 9.7 million corona cases known worldwide. The United States alone reports 2.5 million infected people. For comparison: almost 31,500 cases have been listed in Switzerland to date.
Younger people are at risk of corona risk
The reason why suddenly more and more young people are contracting the coronavirus is still not fully understood. But looking at the numbers, it seems undisputed that the second wave of corona mainly affects people between the ages of 20 and 40.
Even though the younger generation of coronavirus infections often do not show a severe course of the disease, the fact that more young people are affected is certainly worrying. According to CDC director Redfield, the boys continue to act primarily as carriers of disease for people who are actually at higher risk of getting sick. (wheel)
