In Saxony-Anhalt, more than 52 million euros in Corona aid have been reclaimed or voluntarily repaid. As the Investment Bank (IB) announced upon request, repayments were made in more than 8,100 cases and there were voluntary repayments in around 2,700 cases. This corresponds to around 14 percent of the approvals. In total, almost 75,000 Corona aid approvals were issued in Saxony-Anhalt through the various support programs. Around 1.1 billion euros were paid out.

From June 2020 to June 2022, the Corona economic aid supported companies and the self-employed with significant corona-related declines in sales. This includes bridging aid, November and December aid. More than 63 billion euros were paid out nationwide. At the beginning of the week, the deadline for submitting final accounts for companies that had applied for Corona economic aid ended.
Investigations into subsidy amounts in hundreds of cases
When it comes to Corona emergency aid, the investment bank says it checks the use of the funds on a random basis and on an ad hoc basis. In numerous cases there was also suspected subsidy fraud. According to its own information, the IB alone has reported around 1,000 cases. In total, the investment bank is aware of around 1,900 investigations.
Because the original applications for aid were submitted on the basis of estimated values, the audits not only resulted in cases in which money was demanded back from the companies. There are also cases in which additional payments were granted, said a spokeswoman for the investment bank.
The Federal Ministry of Economics recently announced that in around three quarters of the final accounts audited, additional payments were either granted or the provisional approvals were confirmed. In around 25 percent of the final decisions, money is demanded back.
